NOTE: Participants in this course should have completed Street Drug Pharmacology or another similar course.

The course will provide advanced information related to the effects, use and availability of substances of abuse other than alcohol and nicotine. Emphasis will be placed on:

1)   Reviewing basic principles of psychopharmacology

2)   Advanced information on the neuropsychopharmacology of psychoactive substances

3)   Mechanisms of tolerance and physical dependence

4)   Addiction potentials for varying classes of abused substances and underlying reasons for these potentials

5)  Advanced information on each drug’s potential for both acute and chronic psychiatric/neurological impairment

6)  Advanced information on each drug’s potential for producing immediate and long-term physical toxicity

7)  Current slang terms related to street drugs
