This course is available via the Internet. Participants will be able to download course materials or view them on-line. Objective post-tests will cover the subject matter in each of the chapters.  Participants will have up to four weeks to complete the course.

The Synthetic and Emerging Drugs course will provide an overview of issues related to the effects, use and availability of substances that have only recently become popular drugs of abuse. These drugs include synthetic cannabinoids ("K2", "Spice", "herbal incense"), synthetic cathinoines ("bath salts"/"flakka"), the NBOMe/2-CX hallucinogens and more. Particular emphasis will be placed on:

1)   Identifying new drugs that have appeared in the United States within the past five years.

2)   Methods of administering these new drugs and associated variations in onset and duration of drug action

3)   Addiction potentials for varying classes of abused substances

4)   Short- and long-term physical and behavioral toxicity

5)  Potential for both acute and chronic psychiatric/neurological impairment

6)  Current slang terms related to street drugs
