The course will provide an overview of issues related to the effects, use and availability of opioid substances, medication-assisted treatment, and psychosocial approaches treatment. Emphasis will be placed on:

1)   Understanding the pharmacology of heroin and prescription opioid substances.

2)   Understanding opioid withdrawal symptoms

3)   Defining the term “Opioid use disorder”

4)   The use of clonidine, methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone in the treatment of opioid use disorders

5)   Evidence-based and commonly-used psychosocial approaches to the treatment of opioid use disorders

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

•     Identify at least three opioid substances in addition to heroin.

•     Describe the physical and psychological effects of opioid substances.

•     List typical opioid withdrawal symptoms.

•     Discuss the use of medication-assisted treatment as part of a comprehensive program for addressing opioid use disorders.

•     Identify at least three evidence-based treatments for opioid use disorders.

      •    Discuss the use of relapse prevention in the treatment of opioid use disorders.
